Homeopathy: Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia- A Multidisciplinary Approach and Additional Benefits with Homeopathy

One of my best friends started complaining of muscle aches and morning stiffness that increased throughout the days. The muscle pain became so intense and permanent that it prevented her from falling into a restful sleep. Depression and anxiety did not take long to appear and in a few months after several medical appointments, evaluations, labs and tests, she finally obtained the diagnosis of “fibromyalgia“.

What is fibromyalgia?

This is a chronic multifocal musculoskeletal pain syndrome with fatigue and without laboratory studies denoting an inflammatory process. Blood tests are usually “normal”, so there is no “objective” evidence of disease. The criteria for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia approved by the American College of Rheumatology are based on the generalized pain index, the symptom severity scale score, the duration of the pain, and the absence of another disorder that explains the pain. Pain is the hallmark of fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia can also be accompanied by memory disorders, frequent headaches, temporomandibular joint syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, among others.

How is fibromyalgia treated?

Conventional treatment is multidisciplinary and includes: pharmacological intervention: antidepressant and anticonvulsant medications, low-impact exercise as aerobic conditioning and cognitive behavior therapy.

In addition, alternative treatments such as Tai Chi and homeopathy are widely included

The holistic homeopathic approach aims to improve the quality of life by addressing the totality of mental, physical and emotional symptoms taking into consideration possible contributing traumatic events, such as emotional abuse, physical abuse, physical trauma and psychosocial problems.

The Medical Journal of Homeopathy 2014; Vol 7-Num 2, Pag: 90-6 published by Elsevier on the contribution of homeopathy in fibromyalgia makes mention of the improvement in the severe limitation experienced by a number of patients with the concomitant use of homeopathic treatment concluding that homeopathy could bring important benefits within the multidisciplinary approach.
